Ptolemy I Soter took Egypt and, after disposing of Cleomenes, later made Alexandria his capital where he and his descendants ruled for three centuries. They made little effort to integrate the rest of Egypt into their Greek culture but formed their coastal capital into the great intellectual and cultural centre of its age.

Alexandria was founded in Egypt by Alexander the Great. His successor as Pharaoh, Ptolomy II Soter, founded the Museum or Royal Library of Alexandria in 283 BC. The Museum was a shrine of the Muses modeled after the Lyceum of Aristotle in Athens.
