In southern India, Job's tears (Coix lachryma-jobi) [co icks' lack' ri ma joe' bi] have been cultivated for at least 4000 years. The seeds are commonly found in archaeological sites. The grass is often growing in rice fields nearby.

It is growing well in a large pot on our front porch, ... While Job's Tears are one of my favorites to grow each year, I find they can be tricky to get going at times. Simply fill a pot (with drainholes) of your choice with good quality soil, set the pot in standing water and poke the seeds into the soil.
