Most garden varieties of luffa are coarser,less dense, and more flexible than the large white pieces of commercial sponges. The commercial loofah is grown for size and fiber density. Most are also grown in a warm climate and have the benefit of a long growing season.

I knew luffas could be used for skin exfoliating sponges (bought enough in my time) but thanks for the tip about disks for the kitchen sink! I've got seeds for these now, ... I remember growing loofah's as a child - my mother taught me how to turn them into sponges. It was great fun and I hope to do it again someday.
