Poeple keep telling me hand flapping is a sign of ... It's true that whole body movements like hand flapping are a sign of autism, but there are many other signs your son will exhibit if he is autistic. I think that it's normal and i consider it as an excitement tic more than anything;

My son will be 5 in July and I have a concern about a new onset of what appears to be involuntary arm flapping along with simple vocal noises(e.g., ahhh), ... My daughter is a hand flapper. Since he was one year old I have been concerned with his "hand flapping." Although, I call it hand flapping it is more like a palsy movement and stiffening of hands ... It appears he holds it in during school, but on the drive home I will see him flapping as if he has built up all this excitement and needs to get it out.

They usually never go away completely and are often replaced by more socially acceptable ways of modulating arousal/excitement. I have seen a small amount of hand flapping in children with developmental delay and who would not meet the diagnostic criteria for autism.

In the past, I would say she didn't exhibit any hand-flapping, rocking, toe-walking, spinning, etc. (actually she does spin, walk in circles, toe-walk etc. but it is just seems like ... My 5 year old daughter has been hand-flapping (literally flapping both of her hands for one to a few seconds at a time) since a very early age. It was kind of cute when she used to do at 1 or 2 years old as if she was a little bird or butterfly trying to take flight.
