Thermal expansion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thermal expansion is the tendency of a matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature. When a substance is heated, its particles begin moving and become active thus maintaining a g...

The opposite of expansion is contraction. If things expand with the addition of heat, it makes sense that they contract when heat is removed. If you remove enough heat from a gas it will become a liquid. Liquids can turn into solids with further cooling.

Coefficient of thermal expansion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When the temperature of a substance changes, the energy that is stored in the intermolecular bonds between atoms changes. When the stored energy increases, so does the length of the molecular bonds. A...

Heat causes expansion because it increases the vibrations of a material's atoms or molecules. In a gas, heat also increases the speed at which the atoms or molecules move about. The increased movement forces the atoms or molecules farther apart and the body becomes larger.
