Chlorine was discovered by Karl Wilhelm Scheele, a Swedish chemist, in 1774. Scheele thought that chlorine was an oxide of murium, or hydrochloric acid. Scheele heated manganese dioxide and hydrochloric acid and discovered this greenish, yellow gas.
