dBASE's history can be traced back to the mid-1960s in the form of a system called RETRIEVE, which was marketed by Tymshare Corporation. RETRIEVE was used by Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and in the late 1960s they asked one of their programmers, Jeb Long, to produce their own version.
