The modern field of linguistics dates from the beginning of the 19th century. While ancient India and Greece had a remarkable grammatical tradition, throughout most of history linguistics had been the province of philosophy, rhetoric, and literary analysis to try to figure out how human language works.

The book by Robins is the classic book on the history of linguistics, written by the former head of department of SOAS Linguistics department. The volume by Brown and Law is a collection of 23 essays from UK linguists about their career and views of the field, it's quite light reading.

The papers are ordered more or less chronologically (according to the period in the history of linguistics that is discussed), although this is not explicitly stated in the preface. A very useful index of names and one of subjects are added at the end.

These would be good places for postgraduate students to start dissertation workas, especially, would be the last section of the book, ''Research resources for the history of linguistics'' (284-289). The need for such a book.

This title describes the history of linguistics as one periodization after another, this leads to an avalanch of information, that leaves one feeling barried. As one of my classmates said, the author sucks off all the meat and presents the bones.
