The Pencil Pages have become a resource not only for pencil collectors or enthusiasts, but many others who have an interest in information related in some way to pencils.

The Eversharp Pencil built on the history of lead pencil and came to be used synonymously with “mechanical pencil”. There is some confusion in pencil history about who actually invented the mechanical pencil. Hayakawa Tokuji invented the Ever-Ready Sharp pencil in Japan, according to the history of pencils.

One interesting set of objects I thought about is a bunch of pens and pencils. They are not only used to create expressions of one's thoughts, but they in and of themselves show a sort of history of their owner. Many aspects of a pen, from the type to the wear on it indicate various characteristics of the owner.

Only graphite pencils were made in the early days and the strip or lead consisted of pure Cumberland graphite. This was simply cut to roughly the required shape and inserted into the pencil groove. However, stocks of Cumberland graphite dwindled in the early 1800s and imported graphite was used instead.

The completed pencils were then smoothed with a plane and polished by manually rubbing them up and down in a leather covered roller and board. Varnishing the pencils was a later development designed to enhance the natural colour of the wood.
