The key linguistic point is that Hobson's blocks Hobbesian here. Even if there is a valid and coherent reason for Anderson to see his choice as a "Hobbesian choice", he can't use that phrase without taking literate readers aback, and leading some of them to make fun of him.

You can read all about the Great Hobbesian Choice Brouhaha in this 2/19/2005 post, but here's a quick summary. Back in April of 2003, Peter Wood at the National Review trashed John Payton, who argued for the University of Michigan in Gratz v. Bollinger, for using the phrase "Hobbesian choice".

So presumably Mr. Payton didn't mean "Hobson's choice." A "Hobbesian choice" must be something else. A choice like that made by Thomas Hobbes, the English political theorist best known for his justification of monarchy, The Leviathan?

So, no to McCain and that leaves only Obama as a realistic choice. He got my vote, I admire what he has done, limited though it may be, and I will hope for the best. But, there might be something good come of our being forced continually into Hobbesian choics if we are bright enough to seek it.
