Some horses are both cow-hocked and sickle-hocked--a bad combination that puts more stress on the joint. Narrow, thin hocks are also more subject to bone spavin than are large, strong joints. Horses that move the hind legs with a twisting motion, especially when the foot is on the ground, put stress on the hock joints.
