What I mean by that is there are vertical and horizontal grains in jeans and you have to look close at the jeans to tell....not difficult though. I usually use a pencil and trace the part I want to look distressed and go against the grain with the boxcutter; ... Well there are all kinds of ways to make holes in jeans,

if you can pull of a nice subtle distressing on your jeans, then they will look great. but too much will look bad and will look too intentional. the trick is to make it look like theyve accumulated their distressed characteristics over a period of years.
