I assume that most of the "computer geeks" reading this now can feel for me on this one -- but for those that don't: GIFs are lossless, JPEGs are not. GIFs can animate, JPEGs cannot. GIFs are a guaranteed output on almost all devices, including handheld and GPS devices, JPGs are not.
