I have bought a Buffalo 54Mbps Wireless Router-g and a Buffalo PCI wireless card for use with the desktop. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron with Dell Wireless a/g built-in minicard. The connection is not a cable modem or DSL, we are straight off a LAN serving the entire apartment complex.
