The barite at the Rossi Mine is of the gray, sedimentary, bedded, variety instead of the white, hydrothermal, vein-type. At the Rossi Mine there are two major barite ore bodies that have been mined through time. The high-grade orebody - the Sage Hen and the low-grade orebody - the Queen Lode.

Today more than 1,000,000 tons of barite are mined annually in the United States, but only a small percentage is used for the manufacture of paint. Most of the present production goes to the oil industry, where the processed barite is used to weight lubricating muds for deep well drilling.

Arizona has produced approximately 1% of the over 30 million tons of barite mined in the United States since 1882. The first commercial barite productions came from Cochise County in 1925. From available records it is estimated that Arizona's barite production between 1929 and 1955 was about 317,000 tons.

The Walton Barite Mine is located about 4 km southwest of Walton, in Hants County, Nova Scotia, Canada. The mine has been closed for many years and is now flooded. When operating in the 1960's, it accounted for 90% of all barite produced in Canada.
