Coal is a hard, black colored rock-like substance. It is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and varying amounts of sulphur. There are three main types of coal - anthracite, bituminous and lignite. Anthracite coal is the hardest and has more carbon, which gives it a higher energy content.

Coal is called a fossil fuel because it was formed from the remains of vegetation that grew as long as 400 million years ago. It is often referred to as "buried sunshine," because the plants which formed coal captured energy from the sun through photosynthesis to create the compounds that make up plant tissues.

Liquids Made From Coal ; - gasoline and diesel fuels that don't come from petroleum ... So, sythetic fuels (oil, gasoline and diesel) were made from coal. These processes can be used today, but the process is too expensive. It is cheaper to use inexpensive crude oil pumped from below the ground.
