Feldspar is mined from large granite bodies (called plutons by geologists), from pegmatites (formed when the last fluid stages of a crystallizing granite becomes concentrated in small liquid and vapor-rich pockets that allow the growth of extremely large crystals), and from sands composed mostly of feldspar.

Historically, feldspar in Virginia was mined for use in the ceramics industry, for abrasives, and for gemstones (amazonite) (Pegau, 1932). Prior to 1907, according to Watson (1907) feldspar was mined primarily in connection with mica mining.

Why is feldspar important? ... The feldspars are a family of silicate minerals which occur in igneous rocks. There are many different members to the feldspar group. Obviously, silicon and oxygen form the foundation for the group, but calcium, sodium, and potassium are also present.

The color may be homogeneous or vary within a single feldspar crystal. Research is currently being conducted on lower quality plagioclase feldspar mined in Arizona to see if gamma radiation will produce a color shift or enhancement.
