In the United States, significant fluorite deposits are found in southern Illinois (Rosclare and Cave-In-Rock). Optical grade fluorite was mined in Mercer and Woodford counties of central Kentucky. It is found in Cathage in Smith County, Tennessee.

Fluorite is also used as a source of fluorine for hydrofluoric acid and fluorinated water. Other uses of fluorite include an uncommon use as a gemstone (low hardness and good cleavage reduce its desirability as a gemstone), ornamental carvings (sometimes misleadingly called Green Quartz) and special optical uses.

In Illinois, fluorite was mined almost exclusively in Hardin and Pope Counties. The main production came from fissure-vein deposits in the Rosiclare district, and stratiform (bedding plane) deposits in the Cave in Rock district (see map below).
