Bullet swaging is done by putting lead (and a jacket, if you are using one) into a strong, highly-polished swaging die, and compressing the material with high pressure, applied to two punches. One punch slides up and down inside the die, to eject the bullet and to seal the threaded end of the die.

Swaging increases diameter with each step, and drawing decreases it. Every step should be done with a thin film of Corbin Swage Lube applied to the outside surface of the part.

Cold swaging done at room temperature, is effective on thin walled materials and on smaller reductions of cross section. A side benefit of this process is the cold working of the material, improving strength. ... Hot swaging is done at precise elevated temperatures. Heating is usually accomplished by use of induction...

The cold swaging of fittings on wire rope is a severe process requiring considerable movement of the steel in the fitting. The steel in the fitting is forced under great pressure ... It is for these reasons that the swaging must be done in multiple pressings. Dies should be in good condition and must be properly lubricated.

The time for melting lead, heating the moulds, casting, inspecting, rejecting, sorting, sizing and lubricating, cooling and cleaning up makes it difficult to try a few bullets on a moments notice, whereas swaging can be done in seconds starting with a roll of lead wire and a swage die.

A new fixture which is capable of holding an HSA throughout all processes is invented so that Quasi-Static Test can be done before swaging. Handling operations are reduced and rework is made much easi ... in-line swaging said HGAs and actuator to form an HSA; and visual checking and unloading of said HSA. 5.

Both torque control of swaging and diameter control of swaging can be effected. A torque transducer monitors mandrel loading for automatic control of machine operations. A mechanical stop ... An additional advantage is that a more uniformly high proportion of swaging can be done at high speed without spring back.

Swaging is done in a solid die with a diamond-lapped hole, pressing material under tons of pressure and ejecting it back out the same end. ... Then assembly has to be done mechanically by hand, usually not to the same concentricity as with swaging together in a single die cavity.
