Turbidity is measured in NTU: Nephelometric Turbidity Units. The instrument used for measuring it is called nephelometer or turbidimeter, which measures the intensity of light scattered at 90 degrees as a beam of light passes through a water sample.

Classified as an "optical property," direction of illumination, stray light, background, and optical path length, can have an affect the turbidity measured, but not color itself. Some turbidity constituents are temperature sensitive, and may only precipitate out of solution when chilled, or may dissipate when heated.

Turbidity is measured using a secchi disk, a Turbidometer, a Colorimeter or a Color Scale. A secchi disk is a plastic, weighted plate that is lowered into the water. The depth at which it is no longer visible indicates water clarity.
