I still really like my Nikkormat EL, and even the more basic F, but the Canon AE-1, AE-1 Program, and the A-1 were the beginning of what became Canon dominance in much of the market place in years to follow.

The main reason that I wanted to upgrade to this lens was the fact that I was not entirely happy with the autofocus in the dark on my 50mm f/1.4. At f/1.2, this lens, along with the Canon 85mm f/1.2 have the maximum aperture of any lens currently offered by Canon. ... Total overkill and not worth the huge price difference.

While the physical features of this lens are mostly excellent, they would not be worth much if the resulting image quality was not good. To this regard, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens turns in decent but not-as-good-as-I-expected sharpness.

The f/1.4's MF ring is much more usable than the 50 f/1.8's but is not nearly as nice as the 50 f/1.2's. My 50 f/1.4 exposes 1/3 stop brighter than the other two 50s (the other two being correct). The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens delivers excellent image quality for the price.
