You almost always hear that you should spend at least one months salary on an engagement ring but if that is out of your reality spend what you can afford. You can always upgrade the ring later when your finances are in better shape.

Yep, you just have to suck it up and spend the money on a decent ring. When I got engaged about 10 years ago, I ended up spending about 2 weeks salary on an engagement ring with a 2/3 carat diamond. I only would have spent 2 months salary if I was marrying someone like Elizabeth Taylor.
