If This problem is only happening when you use the headphones on one device such as an iPod, the circuit in the device may be damaged. I won't get too involved into how to fix this, though.

they suck...dont they...everyone says to go buy new ones...but they are so expensive. But depending on when you got your ipod, you can actually go to the apple store and trade them in and get a free pair. I believe it has to be underwarrint...

The best solution for you would be to keep your sound system on off. When you'd put the earphones on your head, it wouldn't matter if they'd be broken. You'd never have to buy another pair. I'm glad we solved this. ... Your headphones are gone, there is no fix. You have wires that have come loose in the ear connection..
