CLI isn't hard to learn and Linux offers a great tool for learning it, the “man” pages. But enough of the chatting, Brett asked me to write a guide on how to install a home file server, with a GUI (sigh). In addition to that, he wanted it to run headless, thus requiring a remote administration.

Another possibility, assuming it's also running apache, is to use php (or some other scripting with sessions) - make the website create a session id, ... The second suggestion is a bit out of my skill level. I am running PHP on my web-server, but not on the file-server. But even then, I wouldn't know how to do that.

Linux is now on everybody's radar, both in server rooms and on the desktop. Though most people ... Over all MS has attempted to put all of the configuration that most users use in one place. I think they could do a better job and combine or make available even more. Like the file sharing should be under networking.

I have not seen a test with 3com or other higher end products but otherwise, I would spend the extra $15 to make sure this system delivers its peak performance. Utilizing 'nix OS is often far more effecient than Windows but the Intel card will make this thing scream.

Although we now have a fully configured AFP file server it will not show up in the Finder sidebar on Mac OS X Leopard (but it’s reachable via Go > Connect to Server… in the Finder). ... To make everything work properly you have to edit the nsswitch.conf file:
