Stem-and-leaf plots are a method for showing the frequency with which certain classes of values occur. You could make a frequency distribution table or a histogram for the values, or you can use a stem-and-leaf plot and let the numbers themselves to show pretty much the same information.

Another type of graph is the stem-and-leaf plot. It is closely related to the line plot except that the number line is usually vertical, and digits are used instead of x's. ... To make an ordered stem-and-leaf plot, we arrange the leaves on their given rows from least to greatest, starting from the left.

A scatter plot is a way to look at two variables. For example if we wanted to see if the price of the peanut butter was a predictor of the quality we could make a scatter plot of price and quality. One way to make data more usable is to make a stem-and-leaf plot. The digit(s) in the greatest place value(s) of the data values are the stems. The digits in the next greatest place values are the leaves. For example, if all the data are two-digit numbers, the number in the tens place would be used for the stem.
