If he cat is long haired and its hair is all matted, it won't let you touch it because it is painful. Pet groomers refuse to do the job because the cat scratches. The only solution is to have a vet sedate the cat and groom him.

If you are going on a plane, some planes allow the pets under your seat (don't know if this still applies so you'd have to ask). If traveling by car or have the cat in a camper then your vet will know how much your cat will need and how long the sedation will last.
