It could be kidney stones, arthritis, or any one of another of problems older cats could have. Given that he is an older male, he could be howling when he tries to pee and is having problems peeing. Yes, I would, most certainly get this cat to a vet immediately and have a complete physical done, including blood work.

(THOSE days are long gone, aren't they?) So, I CALLED HIM and he actually was available to talk to me (free-of-charge too!) about what is now considered a "howling syndrome". As previous poster indicated, they are seeing this in older cats a lot (never used to because most cats didn't used to live as long as they do now).
