It was amazing to see the Iu Mien settling here in the bay area in 1980. I have been photographing this community since they arrived as refugees from Laos. It's great to see their progress as they assimilate and grow in the American society.

The 1995 Lao census listed a total of 22,665 Iu Mien (or Yao) people in Laos. This figure includes the Kim Mun and Lanten groups, who we have profiled separately. All of these groups are related, but speak distinct languages and have different customs.
