Frost said, "There are only two meters "strict and loose iambic." In his terms, strict would be 1-2-3 (above) and loose would be 4-5. Iambic meter includes the trocaic inversion and spondee. Anapest and dactl are considered variations of iambic meter.

This example is trochaic tetrameter - i.e. four two syllable feet. Therefore the total line has eight syllables. Trochaic meter is less commonly used than iambic meter. Trochaic is an example of falling meter.

It takes a while to develop an ear for iambic meter. I found a good way to learn more about iambic meter is to read some of the older classic poems written in iambic - reading them repeatedly, paying attention to sound of the stressed syllables in contrast to the sound of the unstressed syllables.
