Why does an ice cube float in water and not sink? ... Can you estimate the density of ice compared to water from looking at the picture above? ... In the following experiment you will calculate the density of water and ice. You many want to review some concepts of mass, volume and density before you begin.

Ice cubes float on water because it is less dense than water. Density measures how much mass there is per volume. For example, if you have a metal cube and a plastic cube of the same volume (same length, width, and height -- same size), the metal cube is denser than the plastic cube.

So, why does ice float? Like most things that float, ice floats because it is less dense than liquid water. Ice is about 9% less dense. When ice forms, it takes up about 9% more space than it did as a liquid.

Ice cubes float higher in salt water... it is more dense... than fresh water. Ice cubes sink in alcohol. Can you figure out why? You might want to read up on density and specific gravity.

Why does ice float on water? (Don’t say that it is common sense, please!) According to my knowledge, solids are usually heavier than liquids. Why is water so special? ... There is more space in ice than in water! This is the reason why ice is lighter than water. Therefore, ice can float on water. Acknowledgement;
