Patients who lack, or have very low levels of, one or two IgG subclasses, but whose other immunoglobulin levels are normal, are said to have a selective IgG subclass deficiency. While all the IgG subclasses contain antibodies, each subclass serves somewhat different functions in protecting the body against infection.

These concomitant immune defects may include deficiencies of certain IgG subclasses or of mannose-binding lectin (MBL).2 The most common IgG-subclass deficiency associated with IgA deficiency is that of IgG2. IgA-IgG2 deficiency can also be seen with other IgG-subclass deficiencies, especially that involving IgG4.

Figure 3 demonstrates recognition by IgG subclasses of adult extracts of P. westermani. The sera from patients infected with P. westermani and P. miyazakii reacted mainly to both 32- and 35-kDa bands with IgG4 (18 of 20 [90%] for patients with P. westermani paragonimiasis;

Recombinant versions of the seven equine IgG subclasses were expressed in CHO cells. All assembled into intact immunoglobulins stabilised by disulphide bridges, although, reminiscent of human IgG4, a small proportion of equine IgG4 and IgG7 were held together by non-covalent bonds alone.
