So yea im having trouble understanding this, What does excited atom mean, and what happeneds after an atom is excited?? ... An excited atom is one that contains more energy than it does in its typical (ground) state. Typically, after an atom is excited, it "calms down" and returns to its ground state.

Quantum theory later became the theory of quantum mechanics, which explains more accurately how the world works on the scale of atoms, electrons and other subatomic particles. Objects this small behave much differently than do objects in our everyday world, often in ways that go against intuition.

"We thereby achieve an exotic, gas-like phase, where the atoms are excited and correlated but do not come together and a 'Bosenova' effect is absent," Naegerl says. The phase was diagnosed by compressing the quantum gas and measuring its stiffness.

That mercury atoms excited by absorption of the line 2537Å are able to activate various kinds of atoms by collisions of the second kind has been shown in several different ways. ... Using pressure measurements to follow the reaction, Cario and Franck (1) showed that hydrogen, in the presence of excited mercury vapor,

With the tunable laser system at beamline I411 it is possible to pump atoms and molecules into excited states. The possibility to study these excited states give rise to several new types of experiments:

The main objective of this research is to explore the properties of a cold gas of highly excited, or Rydberg, atoms. This physical system is at the intersection of atomic, plasma, and condensed matter physics and offers the possibility of studying condensed matter and plasmas in unprecedented ways.
