Not much is different in the Diesel engine. In the Diesel, the fuel is not mixed with the air entering the cylinder during the intake stroke. Air alone is compressed during the compression stroke. The Diesel fuel oil is injected or sprayed into the cylinder at the end of the compression stroke.

If you try and throttle a diesel engine, you will indeed chop power, but diesel fuel has a very wide air-fuel flammability limit, somewhere around 3 to 42:1. With diesel engines, the fuel can be ignited and additional air force fed for additional power, (add on turbo kits, bigger flowing turbos, exhaust systems).

An internal combustion engine is provided with an expansion cylinder and at least one combustion cylinder, preferably two or four combustion cylinders per expansion cylinder. An air-fuel mixture is ignited within the combustion cylinders to drive a combustion piston which, in turn, drives an engine crankshaft.

This will not the case with producer gas- air mixture. In fact, diesel engine cannot operate alone on producer gas as temperature and pressure is not sufficient to ignite gas-air mixture. ... In gasoline engine, air-fuel mixture is sucked during suction stroke and mixture is ignited with a spark at the end of compression stroke.
