Indirect democracy sounds like it might be an exact synonym for representative democracy, but usually it is not. Instead, it is representative democracy taken a step further. With indirect democracy the voters elect representatives who in turn elect representatives who then make the actual decisions.

In general, the term "direct democracy" usually refers to citizens making policy and law decisions in person, without going through representatives and legislatures. The classic example of this is the New England Town Meeting where anyone from the town who wants to show up to debate and vote on town policy can do so.

Direct democracy = the people vote directly on the issues/laws as in a referendum (proposition in California); Indirect democracy = the people elect representatives to vote on the issues for them (legislature votes on bills)
