The index of Industrial Production is a fixed-weight measure of the physical output of the nation's factories, mines, and utilities. Manufacturing production, the largest component of the total, can be accurately predicted using total manufacturing hours worked from the employment report.

French industrial production slipped further in October. Output declined 0.8% m/m, following a 1.2% contraction in September. This reflects reduced activity in the important automotive sector as car scrappage schemes abroad end and the one in France faces being phased out.

Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News had expected industrial production to increase 0.4% and capacity utilization to total 70.7% in October.
