One of those cases has already cost $270,000 ( Henderson, 2006).  In New Jersey, the death penalty has cost the taxpayers $253 million since 1983 and yet no one has been executed since 1963 (Kinney, 2005). Nationally, only about 12% of the people sentenced to death have been executed (Dieter, 2005, pp. 4-6).
