Morse's first name is Endeavour, which was revealed at the end of "Inspector Morse: Death Is Now My Neighbour (#10.1)" (1997). The origin of his name is James Cook's vessel HM Bark Endeavour. (Morse mentions that his father was a Quaker, who have a tradition of "virtue names", and a fan of Captain Cook).
