The more structured and disciplined Northern schools stressed gradual enlightenment requiring continual supervision and guidance (more like Japanese Zen). So Buddhism was more "orthodox" and authoritarian in the North, while in the South it was almost entirely spread by popular conversion rather than official patronage.
