The Inuit formed a circular foundation of ice blocks. They stacked smaller blocks to create a dome at the top. A small hole was left for ventilation. Gaps in the ice blocks were filled with soft snow and the inside was lined with furs.

In the past, the Inuit used to use three homes. The first home was the igloo. The Inuit used the igloo in the winter. They would build the igloo in a spiral shape using the snow from the inside of the circle to cut blocks with a snow knife.

In the igloo, Inuit slept on a low snow platform covered with twigs and caribou furs. Each igloo had a skylight made of freshwater ice. When summer arrived the igloo melted, and the family had to move into tents made of animal skins.
