The Inuit people hunt for their food. They eat primarily fish, sea mammals and a few land mammals. They hunt seals, especially, the ring seal. inuit know a great deal about how seals live. They also know about ice that covers the sea in the winter.

In Eskimo Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit people, "Inuit" means "the people". The English word "Eskimo" is a Native American word which is widely believed to mean "eater of raw meat" (although this meaning is disputed).

The Inuit seem to have reached the Atlantic coast by around 1400 AD. These Inuit people were shorter than the Tuniit, but they had big military advantages because they had dogs and boats, and apparently the Tuniit didn't.
