Two nonradioactive methods for determining glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in conscious mice using FITC-labeled inulin (FITC-inulin) were evaluated. The first method measured GFR using clearance kinetics of plasma FITC-inulin after a single bolus injection.

In a series of experiments, the reliability of creatinine and inulin as GFR markers was determined. Creatinine is the most commonly used indicator of GFR in the clinical setting, primarily because it is a more convenient and does not require invasive tactics as does inulin.
