Rust forms when iron is exposed to oxygen and water, the oxygen being found in the air, and the water being found in a variety of different forms, for example, rain, condensation and water vapour in the surrounding air.

MUST IT RUST? THE REACTION BETWEEN IRON AND ... During the corrosion process, iron does not seem to react with air at all. Water is necessary for the oxidation reaction to occur, to facilitate transport of the electrons, although we do know that iron will rust in air after a long time, since there are water droplets in...

Pure iron sealed in pure dry oxygen does not corrode. In the presence of moisture (humidity) and oxygen it corrodes. Look up the half potentials for iron and water (various reactions). The "CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics" (library) has extensive reduction potential tables.

What makes it do that? What happens to it or what ... Iron "rust" is the oxidation of the metal iron. Lots of metals oxidize, or combine with oxygen, because oxygen basically has allot of tiny electrons hanging out in the higher orbit levels that leave them available to react chemically with other things.
