I have a recipe that calls for a medium fennel bul ... Fennel is quite readily available in most grocery stores, especially the chain stores. Try looking for it under "anise" with the root vegetables. I have noticed that some stores use that name. Anise and fennel are the same thing.

My market sells something that I thought looks like fennel with frothy leaves (sort of like dill) and a white bulb on the bottom. They call it anise. Is this anise or is it fennel? I just saw a recipe on TV ... According to Purdue horticultural dept, they are the same when the terms are used to describe the vegetable.

He said the produce guy said that fennel and anise are the same thing. That seems strange to me because I thought someone said on the Med. Chicken Kebob review thread that fennel was kind of like onion. Of course this anise-thing smelled like licorice (you know, "star anise") and not at all like onion.

Fennel is not the same as anise, but they and some other plants have a smell or taste in common. Another plant that also has a similar flavour is dill.

Wild fennel is sold complete with its elongated bulbs, roots, and abundant green leaves and, sometimes, inaccurately labeled as anise. White fennel and anise are from the same family (Apiaceae), but not so with the other fennels.

Not to be confused with star anise, which is generally used in Chinese dishes, anise is primarily associated with cakes, biscuits and confectionery, as well as rye breads. It is used in much the same way as fennel to flavour fish, poultry, soups and root vegetable dishes.
