I know it's an alloy of copper and zinc, but I've ... Brass is a non Ferrous metal, simply meaning it has no Iron in it. Ferrous is the old name for Iron, which explains the chemical symbol for it being the way it is (Fe). Anything magnetic has Iron in it, and anything without Iron is not magnetic.

Brass is non magnetic. The items you have bought are probably brass plated mild steel. It is quite common. ... this makes it a bit magnetic. It is however unlikely that your brass items are of this more specialised high strength alloy. Regards...
