I have been having an argument about whether midnight (or midday) is AM or PM or if logically they cannot be either. I always believed PM switched over to AM at midnight, not 12:01. What is the accepted form?

However, if you want to be technical, midnight and noon are neither AM or PM. This is because `AM' means `ante meridian,' or before noon, while `PM' means `post meridian,' or after noon. So by definition, noon itself can't be in either piece, and similarly with midnight.

Never call 12 Noon, 12 a.m. ... It is unfortunate that modern electronic clocks choose to display the PM indicator just as it changes from 11:59AM to 12:00Noon. However, the fact they do does not mean they are right.
