Depending on your favorite sci-fi yarns, teleportation is either a very, very bad idea (see: The Fly) or a very, very cool one (see: Star Trek). For scientists, it's just very, very complex, so much so that at this point, teleportation is not a matter of moving matter but one of transporting information.

In 1993 an international group of six scientists, including IBM Fellow Charles H. Bennett, confirmed the intuitions of the majority of science fiction writers by showing that perfect teleportation is indeed possible in principle, but only if the original is destroyed.

'Jumper'-Style Teleportation Just Barely Possible, Physicists have in fact teleported things from one place to another -- but they're no bigger than photons. ... As fantastic as teleportation seems, ... It might be possible, however, to stabilize wormholes with dark energy, the enigmatic force driving the accelerating expansion...

This is may not be teleportation in the typical sense. Is teleportation possible where atoms are physically transformed into pure energy and back to matter again? There are many theories to suggest that matter is just solidified energy (among which are e=mc^2).

In 1988, Kip Thorne and his colleagues at Caltech found a possible way out: a traversable wormhole, one through which you could pass freely back and forth. In fact, for one solution, the trip through a wormhole would be no worse than riding in a plane.

So the final resolution to whether all these science fiction devices are possible will have to wait until physicists can finally develop a theory of the universe that transcends even Einstein’s. ... Perhaps the most tangible of the far-out technologies suggested by Einstein’s theories is teleportation. The key lies in...

What can be done with teleportation? I think a better question might be, "What do physicists consider teleportation to be at the moment?". The point, you see, is that so far the only thing that has been teleported is (at most) one particle.

Obviously something is happening there behind the scenes to make the correlation violation possible.
