The large intestine is wide in diameters but shorter than the small intestine. It is only about 1.5 meters (5 feet) long. There is no decomposition of food in the large intestine. Bacteria in the large intestine break down any quantity of proteins that have not been completely digested.

Many people often confuse the large intestine with the small intestine. However the large intestine is wider yet shorter than the small intestine (in humans around 5 feet in length as compared with 22 - 25 feet, or 6.7 - 7.6 meters, for the small intestine) and has a smooth inner wall.
