The Bering Sea is bordered to the south by the Aleutians, a volcanic archipelago that extends from the Alaska Peninsula to the Komandorskiye Islands. From east to west the islands include the Fox Islands, the Islands of the Four Mountains, as well as the Andreanof, Rat, and Near Islands.

SEA BERING ISLAND and Strait. These take their name from the explorer Vitus Bering. The island (also called Avatcha), which was the scene of his death, lies in the southwestern part of the sea, off the coast of Kamchatka, being one of the Commander or Komandor group, belonging to Russia.
