Biography of Johann Bernoulli (BB^Y-1748) ... Let us return to an account of Bernoulli's time in Paris. In 1692, while in Paris, he met Varignon and this resulted in a strong friendship and also Varignon learned much about applications of the calculus from Johann Bernoulli over the many years which they corresponded.

The two brothers also discovered many new applications for the new calculus which spread its popularity. Johann himself did important work on the study of the equation y = xx, discovered the Bernoulli series and made advances in theory of navigation and ship sailing.

When Bernoulli was later asked to comment on the letter, he denied ever writing it, ... What is important to keep in perspective is that no matter who actually discovered calculus first, both Newton and Leibniz made great contributions to the advancement of mathematical processes, and both deserve credit for that.

Johann Bernoulli (Basel, ... He was employed by his student, Guillaume de l'Hôpital, whose name is still associated with the solution to 0/0 limits (L'Hôpital's rule), which was probably discovered by Bernoulli. After de l'Hôpital's death, Bernoulli claimed to be responsible for most of de l'Hôpital's textbook on calculus.
