John Knowles was born in Fairmont, WV, September 16, 1926. He left home at the age of 16 to attended Phillips Exeter Academy, a New Hampshire boarding school. Knowles graduated from Phillips Exeter in 1945, then spent eight months in the U.S. Army Air Force's Aviation Cadet Program.

John Knowles writes, in general, not about his home turf but about New England or Europe. Only one novel, Vein of Riches, and that not his best, is about West Virginia, his childhood home. His fictional world is a cultivated, cosmopolitan, somewhat jaded world.
